Life Sharing Through Family Living

The Life Sharing Through Family Living program was developed as an alternative choice for families faced with the decision of having to place a loved one in surrogate care. EHCA is continually striving to expand upon the programs and supports offered, and Life Sharing is yet another opportunity to help provide people with disabilities choices regarding their future. Life Sharing carefully matches a family who is paid to provide care in their own home with a person in need of supervised living. Participants in the program receive housing, but more importantly, are provided a home in which they can fully participate. They receive daily life skills instruction, therapies (if needed) and are given opportunities to become part of their community.

"ANYTHING WE DO AS A FAMILY, WE DO TOGETHER,” EXPLAINS STEPHANIE, A PROGRAM PROVIDER.

“WE HAVE TO PLAN A LITTLE MORE AHEAD OF TIME AND MAKE SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS EVERYWHERE WE GO, BUT WE ALSO NOW HAVE MORE FUN THAT SISSY IS GOING WITH US!”

Li
fe Sharing opens the door to new relationships with the provider family while maintaining and fostering family ties. The decision of who is chosen as the Life Sharing provider is ultimately made by the person seeking a provider, with support from EHCA and the person’s family. Provider families must meet strict criteria and undergo an intensive screening process before being considered for Life Sharing. EHCA provides minor home adaptationsn that may be necessary, start-up costs, outside support and access to a family-living specialist.
